5000 years ago, people in ancient Egypt cleaned their teeth with a recipe of powdered ashes, myrrh (ointment), powdered egg shells and pumice (a hard stone). Historians think they put this paste on their teeth with their fingers.
In the 1700s ingredients like brick powder and ground china were commonly found in toothpaste. In 1873 the Colgate Company -- the same one that makes toothpaste today – made a Dental Cream. It came in a jar, smelled very nice and did not contain soap.
Today our toothpaste contains fluoride and other great things to keep our teeth strong.
What can we expect toothpaste to be like in the future?
